Try a bocadillo de calamares

The delicious 'bocadillo de calamares' -that is, squid sandwich- is one of the Madrid's icons. It consists of a fresh bread piece filled with squid rings that have been coated in flour and deep-fried in olive oil. Each 'bocadillo' is made on request, giving the battered squid a tasty, just-cooked crunch. If you want to enjoy it like most locals, eat it standing up in a bar.

Many bars in central Madrid, especially around Plaza Mayor, serve squid sandwiches. One of the oldest and most famous is El Brillante, Glorieta de Carlos V, 8 (Atocha area).

How far is it halal?

The ingredients with which squid sandwiches are made are halal although many of the products from the same establishments where they are offered are not. However, keep in mind that in the preparation of fried foods, sea products and meat never come together (it is not possible to do it because, simply, it mixes and contaminates the flavor).
