They are counted by dozens, and some of the most famous are in some of the cities that, in all probability, you want to visit in Spain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These fortresses are of two types, alcazabas and alc\u00e1zares, which are also words of Arabic origin.<strong>\u00a0Alcazaba comes from the word al-qasbah<\/strong>\u00a0and refers to an urban walled enclosure whose function was to defend a specific place and its contours. The alcazabas housed a military garrison and used to have houses, warehouses for grain and other food, a mosque&#8230; All of this constituted a citadel. At one of its ends could also be, or not,<strong>\u00a0an alc\u00e1zar, that is, a fortified castle or palace that served as a residence for a Muslim ruler<\/strong>. The Spanish word alc\u00e1zar comes from the Arabic al-qasar. As the Muslim territories of Al Andalus passed into Christian hands,<strong>\u00a0the new Christian kings and rulers were taking these fortresses and making them their residences and transforming and modernizing them over time.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Could you have imagined that the main palace of Spain, the Royal Palace of Madrid, a symbol of power and the place where the throne and the crowns of the Spanish monarchs are found, has its roots in an alc\u00e1zar built in Al Andalus times and destroyed by a fire in 1734?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Those that follow are the most important alcazabas and alc\u00e1zares of Arab and Muslim origin that you can visit during your trip to Spain.\u00a0<strong>Many of them are in Andalusia, but you can also find them in other Spanish regions such as Aragon, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla Le\u00f3n or Extremadura,\u00a0<\/strong>among others.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-1-alcazaba-of-la-alhambra-granada-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Alcazaba of La Alhambra (Granada, Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/granada-alcazaba-de-la-alhambra-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0Alcazaba of La Alhambra is, together with the towers called Torres Bermejas,<strong>\u00a0the oldest part of this breathtaking\u00a0 monumental complex<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in Granada.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It was built by Mohammed I, the first Nasrid king (s. XIII). When the new royal palaces were finished and the king and his family moved there, the Alcazaba was turned into a fortress with military functions and the habitual residence of the elite army.\u00a0 In the Alcazaba&#8217;s enclosure you can visit three famouse towers called Quebrada, del\u00a0 Homenaje and de la Vela.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-2-alcazaba-of-malaga-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Alcazaba of Malaga (Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/malaga-alcazaba-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Built in 1040\u00a0on a hill dominating the town,\u00a0this fortress-palace is\u00a0one of the largest Muslim military buildings preserved in Spain\u00a0and the most popular monument in Malaga, Andalusia.\u00a0<strong>It combines the defensive purpose (it had three walls but only two remain), with the beauty of an Arab palace -in fact, three palaces-<\/strong>\u00a0that recalls that of the Alhambra in Granda. Do not miss the gardens and the\u00a0superb view over the city and the marina.\u00a0 Its location is equally unique: next to the remains of a Roman theater.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-3-alcazaba-of-almeria-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Alcazaba of Almer\u00eda (Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/almeria-alcazaba-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Almer\u00eda is the easternmost of the eight provinces of Andalusia.<strong>\u00a0With 43,500 m2, 1,430 meters of outer perimeter and a triple walled enclosure<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>this citadel is one of the largest<\/strong>\u00a0that the Muslims built in Spain. Ordered by Abderram\u00e1n III, enlarged by Al Mansur and concluded by Hayran, an earthquake seriously affected its structure in 1522. Next to this alcazaba you will find a group of troglodyte dwellings carved out of the stone.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-4-alcazar-of-the-christian-monarchs-cordoba-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Alc\u00e1zar of the Christian Monarchs (Cordoba, Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/cordoba-alcazar-de-los-reyes-cristianos-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Next to the impressive Great Mosque of Cordoba you will find this Christian alcazar that<strong>\u00a0stands in the same place where the Umayyad emirs and caliphs resided from 756 to 1236.<\/strong>\u00a0The Islamic palace, which was linked to the mosque by a passageway, occupied an area much larger than the Christian Alcazar. The baths -the so-called\u00a0\u00a0Ba\u00f1os califales, caliphal baths-, which can be visited, are preserved from that Andalus\u00ed building. The gardens of the current alc\u00e1zar also preserve the essence of Al Andalus, the plants brought from the East: lemon trees, orange trees, myrtles, jasmine, alelis &#8230;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-5-alcazar-of-jerez-de-la-frontera-cadiz-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Alc\u00e1zar of Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz, Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/jerez-de-la-frontera-alcazar-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Jerez de la Frontera, which belongs to the province of Cadiz, is one of the largest towns in Andalusia. It is located inland, about 85 kilometers from the Strait of Gibraltar. Between 711 and 1264 it was the Muslim Sherish, one of the prosperous territories of Al Andalus. The Islamic \u00a0alc\u00e1zar, built in the 11th century \u00a0in Almohad style,<strong>\u00a0preserves seven towers (of the twelve it originally had) as well as two gates, the baths and the mosque<\/strong>\u00a0turned into a church.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-6-alcazaba-of-marbella-malaga-costa-del-sol-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Alcazaba of Marbella (Malaga, Costa del Sol, Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/marbella-alcazaba-de-marbella-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Marbella is one of the most famous holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol,<\/strong>\u00a0Andalusia and Spain. There, as in so many other places in Andalusia, the heritage of Al Andalus is very present. Indeed,<strong>\u00a0Marbella was the Islamic Marbiliya.\u00a0<\/strong>In the old village you will find the remains of the Alcazaba and the ancient Arab walls. The construction of the caliphal castle was ordered by Abderrahman III (X century) as a strategic point to control the territory. The wall had over 10 defensive towers, and three gates. Only 2 towers remain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-7-alcazar-of-molina-de-aragon-guadalajara-castilla-la-mancha\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Alc\u00e1zar of Molina de Arag\u00f3n (Guadalajara, Castilla La Mancha)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/molina-de-aragon-alcazaba.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Al Andalus was divided into three large administrative areas, called Marcas: the Upper Marca (most of present-day Aragon, Navarra and part of Catalonia, with capital in Zaragoza); the Middle Marca, with its capital in Toledo (which included the areas that later corresponded to Castilla and southern Aragon) and the Lower Marca, with the entire southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Each of the \u00a0Marcas was divided into districts which were called `Coras`.<strong>\u00a0Molina de Arag\u00f3n was the capital of one of the coras of the Middle Marca.\u00a0<\/strong>An imposing \u00a0alc\u00e1zar remains from this important past. A spacious and elegant complex \u00a0built in Al Andalus times on an old Celtiberian fort between the 10th and 11th centuries .<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-8-aljaferia-palace-zaragoza-aragon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Aljafer\u00eda Palace (Zaragoza, Aragon)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Aljafer\u00eda Palace was originally a Hudid alc\u00e1zar, built during the 11th century in Zaragoza when it was the capital of one of the most powerful Taifa kingdoms in Al-Andalus. This fortress-palace is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, blending its defensive purpose with the refined elegance of an Arab palace. Its central courtyard, interwoven arches, and stunning mihrab are reminiscent of the grandeur of C\u00f3rdoba\u2019s Great Mosque. Today, it remains one of Spain&#8217;s most significant Islamic landmarks and is home to Arag\u00f3n&#8217;s regional parliament<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-9-alcazar-of-segovia-castilla-leon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Alc\u00e1zar of Segovia (Castilla-Le\u00f3n)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/segovia-alcazar-de-segovia-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This imposing medieval alc\u00e1zar has\u00a0<strong>the typical image of castles in European tales, but it is of Muslim origin.<\/strong>\u00a0In 1997, restoration works uncovered some Almohad windows in the main tower.\u00a0 The black slate roofs and the pointed capitals were added in the XVI century. Today this alcazar is the symbol of the old city of Segovia, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.\u00a0<strong>It is only 73 kilometers from Madrid.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-10-royal-alcazar-of-seville-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Royal Alc\u00e1zar of Seville (Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/sevilla-reales-alcazares-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This fortified palace,\u00a0<strong>World Heritage by UNESCO, is\u00a0the oldest palace still in use in Europe.<\/strong>\u00a0The Umayyad governors of Seville began to build it (X cenury).\u00a0Then the Abbadies and later the Almohades. Of those Islamic palaces there is little left except the wall and the garrison yard of the original Al-Mubarak palace, built by Al Mutamid, the poet king. \u00a0However the most famous part of this amazing Royal Alcazar, ordered by the Christian King Don Pedro, was built by the hands of the best Muslim &#8216;builders&#8217; following the inspiration of the Alhambra.\u00a0<strong>It is one of the most beautiful examples of Mudejar art<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-11-alcazar-of-toledo-castilla-la-mancha\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Alc\u00e1zar of Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/toledo-alcazaba-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>If you visit Toledo (only 75 kms from Madrid),<\/strong>\u00a0It&#8217;s impossible not to see it. It is\u00a0 located on the highest hill of this city, a lonely rectangular mass\u00a0dominating the horizon.\u00a0<strong>Abderrahm\u00e1n III built a fortress here, the old al-qasar.\u00a0<\/strong>This strategic place had already been used before by Romans and since then it had\u00a0always been linked to power.\u00a0The current building was ordered to be built by Emperor Carlos V.\u00a0It suffered several wars, fires, bombings&#8230; It\u00a0currently houses the Army Museum.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-12-alcazaba-of-badajoz-extremadura\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Alcazaba of Badajoz (Extremadura)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/badajoz-alcazaba-ibn-marwan-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The city of\u00a0<strong>Badajoz, in western Spain, on the borther with Portugal, was founded in 875 by Ibn Marwan al-Chilliqui.<\/strong>\u00a0It is then that the Arab Alcazaba began to be built, on the highest area of the city, near the Guadiana River.\u00a0<strong>The fortress controlled the natural passage from Castile to the territories of Andalusia and Portugal.<\/strong>\u00a0The Alcazaba has a walled enclosure that comes mostly from the Almohad period (12th-13th century). From this wall you can see Portuguese lands and wonderful sunsets. The Alcazaba of Badajoz is the largest in Europe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-13-alcazar-of-guadix-granada-andalusia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Alc\u00e1zar of Guadix (Granada, Andalusia)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.letsgohalal.com\/images\/Blog\/March-21\/Alcazares--Alcazabas\/guadix-alcazaba-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Guadix is a town in the province of Granada famous for its ancient cave-houses\u00a0<\/strong>and for the peculiar landscape that surrounds it.\u00a0 Of course, one of the most famous monuments in Guadix is its Muslim alcazaba, from the 11th century.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These are the 13 most interesting alcazares and alcazabas in Spain.
