Islamic Watchtowers

It was the Grenadians of the Nasrid kingdom who systematized the placement of towers along the coast in the 13th century. These towers and later ones became key pieces of the Christian coastal defense system from the 16th century, when pirate attacks were a continuous threat. Danger was communicated through smoke during the day and fire at night. Six towers remain standing on the Nerja coast.
