Alcaicería

It is the oldest and most charming shopping area in Granada, very close to the Cathedral. This maze of narrow streets was the old silk souk in Nasrid times. The name Alcaicería comes from the Arabic al-qaysariyya. In the 16th century there were about 200 shops that remained buoyant until a fire completely destroyed them in 1843. The current market, dedicated mainly to handicrafts, is a reconstruction.

The Alcaicería stores are open from 10:00 h or 10:30 h to 14:30 h, and from 17:00 h p.m. to 21:00 h.

What products

In the Alcaicería you can buy mainly handmade products, some traditional such as inlaid wood objects, fajalauza ceramics, typical of Granada, leather products and Arabic-style lamps. In addition, many souvenir and handicraft shops also from Morocco. In the surroundings you will also find spices, books, jewelry and textiles.

A curiosity

Originally, the Muslim market had nine doors that were closed at night to protect the rich goods that were traded inside, mainly silk, but also spices. The souk thus became a citadel. Merchants who came from outside the medina stayed at the nearby Corral del Carbón.
