Great Mosque of Granada

Plaza de San Nicolás s/n, 18010 Granada, Spain

Rating: 4,6

(2.839 reviews)
Its opening in 2003 was a milestone in Granada and the fruit of two decades of effort on the part of the "new" Spanish Muslims, after a hiatus of more than 500 years. Its location is emblematic: at the top of the Albaicín –the historic Muslim quarter– with breathtaking views over the Alhambra. Not only it's a wonderful place for your salats, but also to enjoy a rest and feel that the legacy of Al Andalus is alive.

City/Province: Granada

Type of Experience: Mosques

Address: Plaza de San Nicolás s/n, 18010 Granada, Spain

Facilities:

The facilities of the Granada Mosque are comprised of three distinct parts: the prayer area, the garden, and the Islamic Studies Center.

The prayer area is adorned with elegant, understated elements inspired by Islamic traditions. Its mihrab is inspired by that of Córdoba’s Mosque. Additionally, hand-carved cedar panels display Qur’anic verses that highlight some of Allah’s attributes.

The garden offers a breathtaking view of Sabika Hill, whose peak is crowned by the Alhambra—with the distant Sierra Nevada peaks providing an impressive backdrop. The garden features a diverse array of Mediterranean flora, including pine, olive, pomegranate, orange, and lemon trees, complemented by two fountains decorated in the Andalusian tradition.

Lastly, the Islamic Studies Center houses a library with texts on Islam in Arabic, Spanish, and other languages, as well as various audiovisual resources. It also includes a conference hall that accommodates 140 people and an exhibition space. The ground floor and main entrance area feature a reception and a shop offering books, handicrafts, and mosque souvenirs.
