The Mudejar city

From the 11th century until almost the end of the 16th century, there were many buildings throughout the city in this style that reflects the confluence of the artistic currents of the Christian West along with those from Islam: Mosques transformed into churches as well as other newly built Christian temples, synagogues, bridges, gates, towers, palaces... The Mudéjar is the predominant style in Toledo.

The best examples of Mudéjar in Toledo are: the apse added to the Mosque of Bab al-Mardum when it was transformed into a church (12th century); the church of Santiago del Arrabal -also called "the Mudéjar Cathedral"; Puerta del Sol Gate; the synagogues of Santa María la Blanca (13th century) and El Tránsito (14th century), which houses the Sephardic Museum; the cloister of San Juan de los Reyes Monastery and the Taller del Moro Museum, an old house-palace  (14th century) which today exhibits pieces of Andalusí sumptuous arts from Toledo.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Mudéjar became fashionable again, although the artistry of Muslim architects and master builders had long since disappeared in Spain. The Toledo train station, opened in 1919 and restored in 2005, is a wonderful example. It is considered a monument.
